On their way home, Daisy hits and kills Myrtle. Tom - Angry because it looks like he is losing both his wife and his mistress.Stops when he sees all the cars.Concerned about Myrtle’s death only because he does not want to blamed.(Car) Nick - After the accident, he is disgusted with both Daisy and Tom.He refuses to enter their house. He is the only character that the reader sees change. He can now make a judgment about Tom and Daisy. He is no longer afraid of not being accepted by society. He appears stronger and more a part of the novel. Daisy - The reader begins to see the real Daisy. She does not support Gatsby’s declaration of marriage because see will not give up money and status. She does not need Gatsby after the accident.She needs Tom. She is very selfish, and this shows when she does not stop after killing Myrtle. She is often described with white.It is not innocence. One reason for her affair could be revenge on Tom. Gatsby - He is in love with the idea of Daisy. After Tom exposes him, he has lost all confidence. He is losing his reason for living.His dream is gone. He has a hard time accepting that his dream could have callously killed another and then driven away. When he stands outside of Daisy’s house all evening, he is totally vulnerable. Myrtle - She is killed by the fanciest car around. Shows the dangers of materialism.
Chapter 8 Gatsby returns after watching Daisy all night. Nick urges him to leave town for a while, but Gatsby refuses. Premonition of bad things. The reader learns the history of Gatsby and Daisy. Nick tells Gatsby that he is better than all of them put together.Do you agree? Gatsby is shot by Wilson. Wilson shoots himself. Nick - Fighting with right and wrong. Disgusted with society because they are so shallow and callous. Admires Gatsby because at least he cared about something even if it is only the dream of Daisy. Gatsby - End to idealism.A pure idealist cannot survive in this world. Gatsby realizes that he loved the dream of Daisy but he was trapped by the dream. That may be the reason he did not return right after the war.He would have to reveal to her the real Jay Gatsby, and he would have lost her.Unworthy of Daisy. He dies alone in the pool. He cannot live without his dream. The reader must admire his accomplishments and the fact that he is not like polite society.He tried to achieve the dream. When he dies, he saves Daisy. Tom and George - Both had wives that cheated on them, both became angry, both tried to stop the affairs. Chapter 9 Daisy and Tom have left on a trip. No one wants to see about Gatsby’s funeral. Nick is taking care of the arrangements. Henry C. Gatz - Gatsby’s estranged father from Minnesota, wants to bury him in the East,proud of Gatsby’s possessions. Shows a list of objectives Gatsby wants to accomplish. Written in Hopalong Cassidy Very few people attend the funeral Nick and Jordan end their relationship. Nick meets Tom in town later in the year. Refuses to shake Tom’s hand. Learns that Tom sent George Wilson to Gatsby’s house to kill him. Nick shakes Tom’s hand because he feels that Tom is just a “child.” Nick leaves to return to his hometown. Nick - Becomes a person with integrity and strength Discovers that Daisy & Tom are very shallow and selfish. Gatsby - Achieved the American Dream but at what a cost.The dream can destroy the dreamer if the dreamer is consumed by it. Admirable character Very few attended his funeral.
